The Egg Store

We are proud to publish our Farm Story series to tell the story of a local farm that has partnered with DirectFood.store. We aim to support our partners’ best interests while using this opportunity to help our customers learn more about what they do and why they do it. We also want to increase brand awareness and further develop our brand philosophy by sharing our partners’ insights and ideas with our core audience.

We had the chance to interview The Egg Store, a farm located in Abbotsford, BC that provides farm-fresh free-range and organic eggs. Check it out below and let us know what you think!

What do you produce at The Egg Store, and what products do you offer?

Currently, we provide farm-fresh free-range and organic eggs in a variety of sizes. This enables us to offer the freshest product at our best prices. For more than a decade, we’ve been serving our regular and local customers through The Egg Store, currently located at 1224 Clearbrook Rd. in Abbotsford, BC, in a drive-thru format for added safety. We are open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 am - 2 pm.

What does your company stand for?

Our family stands for farming with purpose. This entails striving for continued growth, knowledge, and advancement on our farm to offer the best eggs from the best hens at the best prices for the community.

One of our central values is that we believe that each community should have local and affordable food options available. We love where we live; the land, the people, the scenery, and the opportunities here. Our dream is to see the community continue to grow and flourish TOGETHER.

What’s the story behind it all?

The farm started after Gerhard and Maria purchased their first farm in the summer of 1957. At first, they started with cows and crops and started egg farming soon after. In August 1980, they incorporated the farm known today as Siemens Farms Ltd. This was at the time their children’s desire to carry on where their parents had left off. Since then, their children, grandchildren, and recently great-grand-children have gotten involved with the farm. Whether helping herd the chickens indoors at sunset, gathering the eggs, or ensuring the wellbeing of our hens, each person helps out and is vital in the process of providing the local community with fresh eggs.

With the farm and the family’s growth over the past decades, the original family farm has grown into three separate family farms, each specializing in their unique farming method. Siemens Farms focuses on free-range farming, Conation Farms produces organic eggs, and Planeview Farms uses an enriched housing system to produce classic white eggs. This allows each family and farm to specialize in providing the best quality care for their hens, which results in a healthy and delicious final product.

We are proud to farm in the beautiful Fraser Valley with our families, providing our local market with the safest and freshest eggs from the happiest hens.

How do you feel about the Fraser Valley and about supporting local businesses?

We believe that it is crucial to support local businesses. Not only can you make meaningful relationships with your “neighbours” by shopping locally, but you also know that the money you’ve worked so hard for stays in your town, where it is essentially being ‘recycled’ into your community. For example, when an egg is purchased from our farm, that same money goes back into paying for the feed truck driver, the egg graders, the chicken movers, supplies from the local nursery, the maintenance men, the egg pickup driver, etc. They then have the opportunity to purchase locally for their necessities as desired. It’s a beautiful cycle – the more money spent locally, the more shared between each other.

What does the future have in store?

In the past, we’ve only offered caged brown and white eggs. Still, over the years, as technology has increased and scientific studies have come out showing alternative methods that can help improve animal welfare, we’ve removed 100% of the conventional cages. Today, I’m very proud to say that our brown eggs are laid by 100% cage-free chickens with the freedom to roam outside, while the classic white eggs come from an enriched housing system.

We are currently working on building a new shop where we can continue to sell eggs at the farm gate and provide the public with fresh farm eggs. We are also hoping to deliver an experience for customers where they would be able to see the actual hens that lay their eggs and the equipment and barn they live in.

How has your relationship with your customers evolved over the years?

My aunt has run the egg store for years, where she’s made long time, meaningful relationships with the customers. The most significant change occurred this year as a result of COVID-19. During these challenging times, we’ve had to change locations and format to a drive-thru option. Additionally, we’ve had to hire more staff to help out, and we’ve also increased our presence on social media to ensure that people are aware that we are still here and open for them to purchase their eggs. We do our best to keep our customers updated on the latest events and announcements and keep that communication channel open via email and social media outlets.
