Porchside Harvest

Porchside Harvest is a local farm that provides nutritious microgreens in several varieties to the community. Microgreens are packed with nutrients and rich in potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium and copper. They are also a great source of beneficial plant compounds like antioxidants. Microgreens are great for sweet and savoury dishes as they can add a pop of flavour, texture and colour to any sandwich or salad.  We wanted to take a closer look at the story behind the Porchside Harvest brand and its products, have a read below as we highlight these aspects and more in this week’s Farm Story.

What do you produce at Porchside Harvest, and what products do you offer?

We grow several microgreens varieties, including Sunflower, Pea Shoots, Broccoli, Kale, Radish, Yellow Mustard (our favourite), Purple Kohlrabi, and Arugula. Microgreens have a very high nutritional value, and each variety has its distinct flavour, making it fun and easy to add to any meal.

What do you and your company stand for?

We believe that everyone should have access to locally grown sustainable food and that easy, nutritious food can be delicious. We love to see our friends, family and community enjoy what we have grown, and it is fun to hear which variety each person likes the most and all the different dishes they use them in.

What is the story behind it all?

We started our farm to provide our friends, family and community with incredibly healthy and sustainable food. We are far from avid gardeners with minimal experience growing produce, and it is fascinating to see the little seeds grow and be ready to harvest in under two weeks. We enjoy watching our entire family take part in the process, and each of us has his or her role within the business.

How do you feel about the Fraser Valley and about supporting local businesses?

Over the last year, we have become more involved in the local food industry in the Fraser Valley, including taking part in various community markets where we have met many great local vendors and artisans who we have enjoyed supporting as well. We have felt very supported within the Fraser Valley and it feels like we are a part of a team to help our community become more sustainable.

What does the future have in store?

As we continue to grow Porchside Harvest and provide delicious microgreens to more people, we also want to use the opportunity to educate the community about why they should include microgreens in their regular meal plan and why microgreens are so nutritious. We also enjoy sharing ideas and recipes for incorporating microgreens into everyday eating habits.
